The Thoroughbred Welfare Initiative is a collective of participants and organisations in the breeding and racing industry that are committed to improving the welfare of horses. We are funding an independent panel, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Welfare Working Group (TAWWG), to make recommendations on how to better our practices.

The challenges of the welfare, rehoming, retraining and the end-of-life for thoroughbreds are national issues that should be of concern to all participants in the industry.

We also need to acknowledge that if we can improve outcomes in these areas, it is our responsibility to do so.

At present, each state racing jurisdiction deals with these issues in very different ways.

As participants we believe this lack of commonality undermines our ability to adopt best practice and leaves our industry vulnerable to criticism. In the face of this national challenge we believe in the need for a national discussion and a national approach to solutions.

We have established the Thoroughbred Aftercare Welfare Working Group (TAWWG) to research, consult and ultimately make recommendations that lead to improved outcomes for our horses.
